KISS training - Keep it SUPER SIMPLE

If you’re a self-coached athlete, it can tricky to know where to place your efforts for the best gains in fitness or speed. before you get caught up in the weeds of training fads and marginal gains - keep it super simple (KISS). For sports such as triathlon that are heavily reliant on the aerobic energy pathways then KEEP these 5 things in mind:

  1. KEEP it STEADY: Train in low aerobic zones most of the time. Progress this to fill as much of your available time as possible NOT by going faster. Gains are made slowly here; over many weeks, months and years.
  2. KEEP it CHALLENGING: Train in high aerobic zones (lactate threshold, LT2 & above) occasionally. Progress this by accumulating more minutes in zone NOT by going even harder.
  3. KEEP RECOVERING: Eat and sleep well to maximise recovery/training adaptation as best YOU can.
  4. KEEP LEARNING: Build skills NOT simply fitness. The aim of most sports is to get faster and not simply to try harder. In triathlon, view the 3 disciplines as skills to learn in order to become more efficient, economical, faster and less injury prone.
  5. KEEP it FUN: Enjoy what you do! Whether it’s virtual, social or competitive - remember it’s your choice to do it and do it with a smile. Envisage much of your training as purposeful play, in which you develop skills and fitness through questioning, testing, changing, challenging yourself and others around you.
