Unfortunately injuries often go hand in hand with any sport or physical activity, especially when you're pushing your body to its full potential and trying to achieve new levels of success. It can be really difficult to deal with these setbacks as it can often leave you feeling powerless and like your hard earned progress is slipping away. As such we have decided to provide you with a few simple things to consider and focus on whilst dealing with an injury and making your comeback.
Mindset: “The comeback is always greater than the setback”
Learning opportunity - Try writing down everything positive and productive that you have learned from this experience and change anything that you need to in order to not make the same mistakes again. Utilise this time to reflect and learn, it’s how we grow and become a better and more adaptable athlete.
Mental comeback - You won't win the ‘outer’ game (your body) unless you play and win the ‘inner’ game (your mind). The inner game should be at the core of your approach as excellence always starts inside and works outward from the head and heart. Make your mental game an integral part of your comeback and rehabilitation. Grind harder and smarter to make a mental comeback and you'll reach your full potential and attain comeback success.
Take back control
“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become”
Focus on the present - Remove expectations and focus on what you can control and where you are currently at. It's time to listen to your body and honestly assess where you are now and what it will take to come back, that way you can generate a realistic plan and focus on getting back to it.
Set clear and realistic goals - Just because you're injured doesn't mean that progress needs to stop, far from it in fact. Set some very clear and realistic goals at the start of your injury and hold yourself accountable to achieving them. These goals will be different for each and every one of us but it's about having something to aim for and giving us a sense of ownership over the situation and not letting your injury have power over you.
Having the right mental approach to your situation and rehabilitation. The bigger the setback, the bigger the opportunity to learn and the more glory and satisfaction to be gained upon a successful comeback. It's time to take back control and make your comeback story one to remember!
